Card Patterns: Create and Transition
The idea
The method's Toolbox gives patterns for situations that recur, and two of the most common are create-and-validate and state transition.
In practice
Step one, create and validate: when a story tangles creation with validation rules, write one card called create the thing. List its required fields, optional fields, field and cross-field validation, and timing and permission rules. One such card often supports several stories, such as web, mobile and batch entry. Step two, state transition: when status changes come with complex permissions, write one card per cluster of transitions, such as change the status, or escalate. Focus it on the allowed from-and-to states, the preconditions, who may make the change, and the logging and side effects it requires.
Where people slip
The transition card is where rules scattered across workflow diagrams and old emails usually come together for the first time.
