Card Patterns: Generate, Sync, Schedule

The idea

Three further Toolbox patterns cover documents, consistency between things, and scheduled jobs.

In practice

Step one, generate a document: write a card called generate the document from the thing, naming which fields feed it, what triggers it, when it must not be generated, and what is logged. Step two, cross-thing consistency: when updating one thing must change another, write one card naming both. Say which is the source of record, whether the update is immediate or batched, and what happens when it fails. Step three, scheduled process: for a nightly or monthly job, write a card naming the things it touches, how it selects records, what it changes or creates, and how it logs and handles failure.

Where people slip

Scheduled jobs are the behaviors teams most often forget to write down, because no screen shows them.
