Room Turnover

Captions available

The idea

Room turnover is cleaning and resetting the operating room between cases, so the next patient enters a room that is clean.

In practice

Follow the process, in order. First, the drapes, linen and trash are bagged and removed, and disposable sharps contained. Second, the used instruments are contained for transport. Third, surfaces that were contaminated, or that staff touched, are cleaned and disinfected, including the operating table, equipment and furniture. Fourth, blood and spills, on floors and elsewhere, are cleaned up promptly with an appropriate disinfectant. Fifth, the room is restocked and set up for the next case.

Where people slip

The federal standard requires contaminated work surfaces to be decontaminated after each procedure. The operating table and the floor around it are where the next patient's case begins, so they are cleaned every time, not only when they look dirty.
