Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 28 TSC 692 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Infectious Cases and Turnover
The idea
After a case involving a known infection, turnover follows the same standard process, with any additional steps the facility's infection-prevention policy adds.
In practice
Learn why. First, standard precautions treat blood and body fluids from every patient as potentially infectious, so every turnover is already thorough. Second, the isolation guideline notes that equipment and instruments not adequately cleaned between patients can transmit pathogens. Third, some organisms need a different approach: the spores of Clostridioides difficile resist common surface disinfectants, and alcohol does not kill them. Fourth, for those organisms, the disinfection guideline describes the use of chlorine-based products for surfaces. Fifth, the infection-prevention team sets which products and steps apply.
Where people slip
Because standard precautions already assume every patient may carry an infection, the extra steps for a known infection are additions, not the start of careful cleaning. A turnover that cuts corners because a patient seemed low risk fails every patient.
