The idea
Ultrasonic devices use high-frequency vibration to cut and seal tissue at the same time, and advanced bipolar devices seal vessels.
In practice
Ultrasonic devices cause less heat spread than electrosurgery but can be slower; the back of a sealer's tip can also get hot.
Where people slip
Keep hot tips away from vital structures and off the drapes after use.
