Preventing Unintended Burns

Captions available

The idea

Electrosurgery can burn tissue that was never meant to be touched, and a few habits prevent most of these burns.

In practice

Learn the causes and their prevention in order. First, direct burns from the active electrode: keep the pencil in its holster when not in use. Second, accidental activation: keep the foot pedal positioned and dry, and the pencil out of reach of anything that could press it. Third, lateral thermal spread, heat spreading into nearby tissue: surgeons use the lowest effective setting for the shortest time. Fourth, residual heat: tips stay hot after use, so they are not rested on tissue. Fifth, current escaping through damaged insulation or into nearby metal: inspect cords and insulated instruments, and keep cords off metal instruments.

Where people slip

Many energy burns are not seen at the time; they appear later as complications. Prevention depends on habits followed every time, not on noticing a burn after it happens.
