Energy Near Oxygen

Captions available

The idea

Electrosurgery is a major ignition source, and using it near supplemental oxygen or flammable preparations creates a fire risk.

In practice

Follow the precautions in order. First, the anesthesia provider uses the lowest oxygen concentration the patient needs and reduces it before energy is used near the airway, when the surgeon gives warning. Second, the surgeon tells anesthesia before activating an energy device near the head, neck or upper chest. Third, alcohol-based preparations are completely dry and their fumes dispersed before energy is used. Fourth, sponges and towels near the site are kept moist. Fifth, the pencil is holstered between uses and the lowest effective setting is used.

Where people slip

All three sides of the fire triangle meet at the tip of an active electrode near oxygen. Communication between the surgeon and the anesthesia provider is the most important control, and the scrub person can prompt it.
