Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 22   TSC 530 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Passing Sharps Safely

Captions available

The idea

Sharps, such as scalpels and loaded needle holders, are passed in a way that keeps blades and points away from everyone's hands.

In practice

The sharp edge or point faces away from the surgeon's and the scrub person's fingers; many teams pass sharps only through a neutral zone.

Where people slip

Most sharps injuries happen during passing, so passing sharps is never rushed.
