Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 22 TSC 529 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Passing Instruments
The idea
Instruments are passed so the surgeon can use them immediately, without looking away from the field or adjusting their grip.
In practice
Follow the habits in order. First, know which instrument is wanted, and confirm if the request is unclear. Second, pass ring-handled instruments, such as clamps, scissors and needle holders, placing the rings firmly into the surgeon's palm. Third, orient the tips in the direction the surgeon will use them, for example with a curved clamp's curve matching the surgeon's work. Fourth, pass with enough firmness that the surgeon feels the instrument arrive. Fifth, pass sharps only by the method the team has agreed, often through a neutral zone. Sixth, take back the used instrument and return it to its place.
Where people slip
A surgeon focused on the wound should never have to look at what they were handed. Passing well is a skill practiced until it is automatic.
