Linear, Cutting and Circular
The idea
The ACS student guide describes three main stapler types: linear staplers, linear cutters and circular staplers, plus versions for laparoscopy.
In practice
Learn the types as the guide describes them. First, a linear stapler places a straight line of staples without cutting, used in ligation and joining. Second, a linear cutter places staples and cuts between the rows in one action, so both edges are sealed as they are divided. Third, a circular stapler makes a circular cut and staple line, used to rejoin hollow organs such as the large bowel. Fourth, endoscopic staplers do the cutting and stapling through laparoscopic ports, some with heads that articulate to reach difficult angles. Fifth, clip appliers place individual clips on vessels.
Where people slip
Each stapler has its own reloads, and the wrong reload will not do the job. Keep each stapler's reloads with it, and confirm the size before passing one.
