Handling Implants

Captions available

The idea

Implants are devices meant to stay in the patient, so their sterility, identity and records are handled with extra care.

In practice

Follow the handling in order. First, the implant needed is confirmed with the surgeon, including its type and size; critical equipment and implants are reviewed at the time out. Second, the package is inspected for damage, moisture and expiration before it is opened. Third, implants are opened only when the surgeon confirms they are needed, to avoid waste. Fourth, implants processed in the facility come from loads monitored with biological indicators, and are ideally not used until results are negative. Fifth, the implant's identifying information is recorded and linked to the patient.

Where people slip

Immediate-use steam sterilization is not recommended for implants. If a needed implant is missing or contaminated, the circulating nurse and surgeon decide the next step under facility policy.
