The idea
Every implant placed in a patient is recorded with information that identifies it and links it to that patient.
In practice
Records allow the facility to trace an implant if a sterilization problem or device recall is discovered later.
Where people slip
An implant without its identifying record cannot be traced, so the record is completed before the case ends.
