What Sutures Do

The idea
Sutures hold tissue together until healing has made the tissue strong enough on its own, or permanently secure a structure or device.
In practice
Closing an incision by suture, staples or glue lets it heal by primary intention, with the edges held together.
Where people slip
The wrong suture or needle can cause wound breakdown or tissue injury, so the choice is deliberate.
