The idea
Aseptic procedures are sequenced from clean to dirty, working from the least contaminated area toward the most contaminated.
In practice
In skin preparation, that means starting at the planned incision and moving outward, never bringing an applicator back from the outer edge to the center.
Where people slip
An applicator that has touched a dirtier area does not return to a cleaner one.
