The Scrub Person's Part in the Checklist

Captions available

The idea

The scrub person has specific responsibilities in the surgical safety checklist, especially at the time out and at the end of the case.

In practice

Walk the scrub person's parts in order. First, at the time out, the scrub person, or the person who set out the equipment, verbally confirms that sterilization was performed and that the sterility indicators were checked and passed. Second, any discrepancy between expected and actual indicator results is reported to the whole team and resolved before the incision. Third, the scrub person raises any equipment problems or safety concerns not already covered. Fourth, before the patient leaves, the scrub person confirms the final counts with the circulating nurse. Fifth, specimens handled on the field are labelled and confirmed aloud.

Where people slip

When there is nothing to report, a short statement is enough: sterility verified, no special concerns. Saying it aloud matters, because silence cannot be checked.
