Ethnography

The idea
Ethnography is the extended study of a whole way of life, immersing a researcher long enough to describe a group's culture from inside it.
In practice
A year in one neighborhood yields an account of its routines, its rules, and who enforces them.
Where people slip
Immersion is not membership; the account still answers to evidence.
