The idea
The experimental group receives the treatment being tested; the control group does not, and exists to show what would have happened anyway.
In practice
Within one office, employees are randomly assigned to the wellness program or the usual routine; the gap in sick days between the two groups is the effect.
Where people slip
Without a control group, an improvement cannot be told from ordinary change.
