The idea
An experiment tests a hypothesis by randomly assigning subjects to conditions and changing one factor while holding others constant, so any difference in outcome can be attributed to that factor.
In practice
Two comparable classrooms receive different feedback methods; everything else is kept the same.
Where people slip
Sociological experiments are rare, because most social conditions cannot be assigned.
