Tsunami: Four Causes, One Wave
Captions available
The idea
A tsunami, Japanese for harbor wave, forms in four ways: underwater earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, or extraterrestrial impacts. It travels outward in a circle at about five hundred miles per hour, with deep-ocean crests only two to three feet high, so ships never feel it; height builds near shore.
In practice
December twenty-sixth, two thousand four, Indonesia.
Where people slip
