Magma, the Geothermal Gradient, and Eruption Signs
Captions available
The idea
Magma holds melt, solids and volatiles, dissolved gases, whose proportions govern its behavior. The geothermal gradient, the rate temperature rises with depth, averages about twenty-five degrees Celsius per kilometer in the upper crust. Eruptions are forecast from history, earthquakes, slope deformation, and gas.
In practice
Active, dormant, extinct.
Where people slip
Time and magnitude stay hard to pin down, Dastrup says.
