Wegener's Evidence and Its Missing Mechanism
Captions available
The idea
Alfred Wegener, a German meteorologist, published in nineteen ten a hypothesis that the continents had moved: continental drift. His evidence: coastlines fitting like a jigsaw, matching fossils across oceans, noted since eighteen fifty-eight. He lacked the mechanism, and plate tectonics later supplied it.
In practice
South America's bulge in Africa's bight.
Where people slip
The exam asks what Wegener had and what he lacked.
