Two Court Systems, One Top

Captions available

The idea

The United States has a dual court system, federal and state, with the Supreme Court at the top. Each level has its own jurisdiction; each has trial and appellate courts. No two state systems are alike, which multiplies chances to be heard and risks uneven treatment.

In practice

Original jurisdiction hears a case first; appellate reviews it.

Where people slip

Fifty state systems, one federal.
