Social Sciences and History / Unit 7 SSH 0630 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Expression, Press, Assembly, and Their Limits
Captions available
The idea
The First Amendment protects expression by the public, the media and organized groups: rallies, protests, petition of grievances. Symbolic speech communicates without words. Prior restraint stops publication in advance. Obscenity, by contemporary standards, falls outside protection. All yield to public order and others' rights.
In practice
An armband as symbolic speech.
Where people slip
The Third Amendment, quartering, is the least litigated.
