The idea

The establishment clause forbids government to endorse a state-sponsored religion, or favoring religion over non-religion. The free exercise clause forbids government to regulate religious belief and practice. The Sherbert test strikes a burdening law unless a compelling interest is served by the least restrictive means.

In practice

Blue laws; conscientious objectors.

Where people slip

Both yield to limits for public order.
