Social Sciences and History / Unit 7   SSH 0607 short lesson, about 20 seconds

English Liberties and the Broken Contract

Captions available

The idea

Colonists prized their English liberties. They came to see life, liberty and property as natural rights no government could take, not the monarch's gifts. The Proclamation of seventeen sixty-three, jury-less smuggling trials, taxes without consent, and interference with self-government convinced them the social contract was broken.

In practice

Independence declared in seventeen seventy-six.
