The idea

Indulgences promised time off purgatory. Luther held that faith alone saved, not works. Calvin in Geneva added predestination. Henry the Eighth broke with Rome for an heir by the Act of Supremacy of fifteen thirty-four.

In practice

By sixteen hundred: Catholic south, Orthodox east, Protestant north.

Where people slip

Two reformations protested the Church's failings; England's began, the anchor says, with a king's desires.
