Absolutism: Louis XIV and Prussia

Captions available

The idea

Richelieu's intendants laid France's foundation. Louis the Fourteenth, king from sixteen forty-three to seventeen fifteen, outlasted the Fronde and ruled from Versailles. Prussia's Great Compromise traded nobles' control of serfs for the king's taxes and army.

In practice

Governments about four times larger; armies from twenty thousand past one hundred fifty thousand.

Where people slip

Spain, bankrupt by the sixteen twenties, shows absolutism failing.
