The Medieval Agricultural Revolution and the Towns
Captions available
The idea
Europe held about fourteen million people in six hundred and about seventy-four million by thirteen hundred. Invasions ended as Vikings and Magyars settled, and heavier plows raised yields. Towns were reborn on the surplus.
In practice
A serf who stayed in a town a year and a day, legally free.
Where people slip
Early medieval economies had been local barter. Merchants, not lords, now led the cities.
