Feudal Law and the Manor
Captions available
The idea
The feudal system matured in the eleventh and twelfth centuries: vassals received land for military service, later cash. A manor meant a lord's house and lands; peasants owed rent and labor. Yeomen owned plots; serfs were bound; cottagers, landless.
In practice
A knight with no livelihood outside war, pressing for raids.
Where people slip
Vocation was fixed by birth. Women held legal agency in a misogynist frame.
