Captions available
The idea
Iron needs no alloy and no long-distance trade, so it spread slowly from about eleven hundred BCE. The Phoenicians became the sea traders and colonists of the new network. Assyria alone survived the collapse and first conquered and held its neighbors with a standing army.
In practice
A Phoenician fleet circling Africa, a tale the anchor calls uncertain.
Where people slip
Assyria was the model Persia softened.
