The idea
The Stamp Act of seventeen sixty-five was a direct tax on paper and documents. The Virginia Resolves answered that colonists could be taxed only by their own representatives. Parliament repealed the act in seventeen sixty-six.
In practice
Sons of Liberty in the streets; Daughters refusing British cloth.
Where people slip
The Townshend Acts followed, and on March fifth, seventeen seventy, soldiers killed five Bostonians: the Boston Massacre.
