Shifting Cultivation, Swidden, Slash-and-Burn
Captions available
The idea
Shifting cultivation is subsistence farming with a kind of natural rotation: fields are farmed, then left to recover. Slash-and-burn obtains land by slashing vegetation and burning the debris; the cleared land is swidden. Crop rotation keeps the field and changes the crop.
In practice
Ash fertilizes a few seasons.
Where people slip
Shifting the field against rotating the crop.
