Pastoral Nomadism and Transhumance
Captions available
The idea
Pastoralism is subsistence breeding and herding of animals. Pastoral nomadism is its traditional form: herders travel long distances with no fixed pattern. Transhumance is a seasonal vertical movement, herds to cooler, greener high pastures in summer and back to lowlands for winter.
In practice
Distance without pattern; altitude with a calendar.
Where people slip
Transhumance has a home; nomadism does not.
