Reservations, Allotment, and Americanization
Captions available
The idea
The Indian Wars ended with the Plains nations forced onto reservations. Sand Creek and Wounded Knee were massacres. Reformers' Americanization policy followed: boarding schools and allotment of tribal land to households.
In practice
Surplus reservation land sold to settlers after allotment.
Where people slip
The anchor's judgment is that well-meaning reformers traumatized children and impoverished nations. The course states the record: schools, allotment, land lost.
