Social Sciences and History / Unit 2   SSH 0105 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Urbanization, Immigration, and the Great Migration

Captions available

The idea

Electricity and steam freed factories from rivers, and cities filled with workers from the countryside and from southern and eastern Europe. African Americans left the rural South for northern cities: the Great Migration.

In practice

Push of violence and poverty; pull of wages and the vote.

Where people slip

Both groups met discrimination and blame for urban ills. Settlement houses, largely run by women, offered relief.
