Social Sciences and History / Unit 11   SSH 1007 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Reading a Population Pyramid

Captions available

The idea

A population pyramid graphs the distribution of age groups, cohorts, in a population. A wide base is young and fertile; a wide top, aging. The dependency ratio compares those outside the labor force, generally under fifteen and over sixty-five, with those in it.

In practice

A bulge in the twenties: a boom cohort.

Where people slip

The pyramid shows structure, not size.
