The idea
The visible spectrum is the narrow band of electromagnetic wavelengths the human eye can transduce.
In practice
Wavelengths shorter than violet and longer than red reach the eye and produce no visual signal at all.
Where people slip
Visible describes human receptors, not the light. Other species transduce bands humans cannot.
