The idea
The contact hypothesis holds that intergroup contact reduces prejudice when the groups have equal status, shared goals, cooperation, and institutional support.
In practice
Cooperative tasks requiring both groups reduced hostility in field studies where the four conditions held.
Where people slip
Contact without those conditions can increase prejudice. The conditions are the claim, not a footnote to it.
