The idea
In-group bias is the tendency to evaluate one's own group and its members more favorably than others.
In practice
Participants assigned to arbitrary groups by coin flip allocated more resources to their own group within minutes.
Where people slip
The bias appears with groups that carry no history and no stake. Minimal grouping is enough to produce it.
