The idea
Asthma is a long-term disease in which the airways become inflamed, swollen and tightened.
In practice
Inflammation, swelling and spasm of the airways block air from entering, and extra mucus adds to the blockage; it affects adults and children alike.
Where people slip
An asthma attack can worsen quickly, so report wheezing or labored breathing at once.
