The idea
Heart failure means the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body's needs.
In practice
When the right side fails, too little blood reaches the lungs; when the left side fails, too little oxygen-rich blood reaches the rest of the body.
Where people slip
Heart failure does not mean the heart has stopped; it is a long-term condition that the provider manages over many visits.
