Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 28 MAS 686 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Before You Release Information
The idea
Every release of health information follows a check, so that the right information goes to the right person for a permitted reason.
In practice
Step one: verify the identity of the person asking, and their authority to receive the information. Step two: confirm the purpose. Is it treatment, payment or operations, or does it need the patient's written authorization? Step three: if authorization is required, confirm that a valid, signed form is on file. Step four: release only the minimum necessary for the purpose, except for treatment between providers. Step five: use a secure method of sending it. Step six: document the release as the practice requires.
Where people slip
A caller claiming to be a relative, an employer or an attorney does not get information because they ask confidently. Verify first, and when in doubt, route the request to the privacy officer.
