The idea
The privacy rule allows sharing information directly relevant to a family member's or friend's involvement in the patient's care, in limited ways.
In practice
Generally the patient must have the chance to agree or object first; when the patient is present and agrees, sharing relevant details is allowed.
Where people slip
When you are unsure, ask the patient privately, or ask the privacy officer.
