The idea
The skin is an organ, part of the integumentary system with the hair and nails.
In practice
It keeps out germs and chemicals, prevents dehydration, senses touch and temperature, and helps regulate body heat.
Where people slip
Broken skin loses its protective role. A wound is an open door, which is why later units treat it with care.
