Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 2   MAS 034 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Body's Cavities

Captions available

The idea

The internal organs sit in two main cavities: a larger ventral cavity in front and a smaller dorsal cavity behind.

In practice

The diaphragm splits the ventral cavity into the thoracic cavity, holding heart and lungs, and the abdominopelvic cavity below; the dorsal cavity holds the brain and spinal cord.

Where people slip

The diaphragm is a wall, so chest and abdomen are separate compartments.
