Suffixes That Name Procedures
Captions available
The idea
Some suffixes tell you that a word names a procedure.
In practice
Ectomy means removal, otomy means cutting into, ostomy means making an opening, plasty means surgical reconstruction, and scopy means examining, often with a viewing instrument.
Where people slip
Otomy and ostomy differ by one letter but name different procedures: cutting into an organ versus creating a lasting opening.
