Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 12 MAS 284 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Normal Temperature Ranges by Route
The idea
Each temperature route has its own normal range, which is why the route is recorded with every reading.
In practice
In degrees Celsius, the reference textbook gives these ranges. Oral: about thirty-five point eight to thirty-seven point three. Axillary: about thirty-four point eight to thirty-six point three, the lowest of the four. Tympanic: about thirty-six point one to thirty-seven point nine. Rectal: about thirty-six point eight to thirty-eight point two, the highest of the four. The order of the ranges matches the route differences from the earlier videos: axillary reads lowest and rectal highest.
Where people slip
A rectal reading of thirty-eight is within its normal range, while the same number taken orally is above the oral range. Never compare readings without knowing the route, and use the practice's reference ranges.
