Tympanic Temperature
Captions available
The idea
A tympanic thermometer reads temperature in the ear canal.
In practice
Put on a probe cover, ask the patient to hold still, and for an adult or older child gently pull the outer ear up and back to open the canal.
Where people slip
Tympanic readings typically run about three to six tenths of a degree Celsius higher than oral.
