Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 12 MAS 280 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Wait After Food, Drink or Smoking
Captions available
The idea
Recent food, drinks, gum or smoking can make an oral reading falsely high or low.
In practice
Wait fifteen to twenty-five minutes after a hot or cold food or drink, and about five minutes after chewing gum or smoking, before taking an oral temperature.
Where people slip
Ask before you measure; a patient who finished an iced coffee minutes ago will read low.
