Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 11 MAS 258 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
The Parts of a Health History
The idea
A comprehensive health history covers six areas, gathered mostly as subjective data.
In practice
The first area is demographic and biological data, such as name, date of birth and allergies. The second is the reason for seeking care. The third is current and past medical history, including medications. The fourth is family health history. The fifth is functional health, meaning how the patient manages daily activities, sleep, nutrition and relationships. The sixth is a review of body systems, a set of questions system by system.
Where people slip
The practice decides which parts the medical assistant collects at each visit. A routine follow-up may need only an update, so do not repeat a full history unless the practice's process asks for one, and never skip allergies and medications.
